This might seem like just another post about shopping for the petite women out there. Let’s be honest as one of these I’m always looking for tips and new places to shop to make it easier to find cute looks. However, most retail stores consider petite to be somewhere between let’s say 5’2 and 5’4, but there is a whole other level of “petite” for those of us who are under 5 feet tall. At 22 years old I’m only 4’10, yes you read that right. I have this biggest problem finding clothes that are proportioned for such a short stature. Over the years, I’ve found ways around it though and I’m here to share 5 of my petite shopping tips if you’re under 5 feet tall!
Petite Shopping Tips: Summer Edition
The Perfect Little Black Swimsuit
My number one problem when shopping for the beach has been finding that perfect little black swimsuit. Recently I’ve found myself hopping on board with this whole one-piece suit trend. That doesn’t mean I don’t want to show some skin and look cute in the process. I’ve found a lot of the time I can’t find ones that have accents in the proper place, or they are disproportionate in the length, either too short for my torso or too long.
A few weeks ago I was on the hunt for a new one because I had a friend coming into town and we planned to spend a ton of time out by the water, it was then that I stumbled on Rosegal. While I was hesitant at first because, it all ships from China, I was pleasantly surprised when my suit arrived. It was so adorable and because it was made for people of slightly shorter stature it fit perfectly. I highly recommend it and it’s so inexpensive!
Maxi Dresses Are Possible For Short Ladies
Maxi dresses are not impossible. A lot of people say that if you are super petite you can’t wear maxi dresses. In reality, it’s all about finding the right cut and style. One of my all-time favorite maxi dresses is an empire waist keyhole dress with a beautiful pattern that I found in the petite section of JCPenny linked here: Maxi dress Pick a cut that features a higher than natural waist so that you can hem it if needed without making the proportions of the dress look off, and always check out the petite section because they make shorter inseams and proportion dresses for those who are more on the petite side.
High Waisted Is Your Friend
Anything high waisted is probably your friend. If you are more on the petite side high waisted shorts, pants, and skirts are your friend because they give the effect of a longer leg.
That is never a bad thing when you are on the shorter side of life. I used to think that I would never be able to wear long maxi skirts. I learned it was all about finding one that fit my stature. That meant finding a skirt that hit above my natural waist and fell away from my body. Being of a more athletic build anything that clings too tightly to my legs can be a dangerous balancing act. Maxi Skirts with pleats and satin fabric assure that it falls softly away from the body. High Waisted Shorts are some of my fav trends for the beach, especially when wearing a bikini and the sailor button detail is so cute!
Shamelessly Shop Kids And Juniors Section
Don’t be afraid to shop in the kids/junior section! It’s one those great petit shopping tips that will save you money! I know that once you reach a certain age you might feel like this isn’t a good idea. In all honesty, a lot of time the junior/kids version of things is just the same as the adult version. It will end up saving you a lot of money, especially when it comes to shoes. You can often find basic staple items that are the same as the adult. I often shop juniors stores like Charlotte Ruess, Forever 21 and H&M for awesome deals.

Dillards Kids, you can find great deals on everything from Nike to jeans and more by looking for the same brands in the kid’s sizes. I pay $45 for my converse versus $75 for the exact same pair in the adult version!
Big T-shirt? Now Its A Dress
Buy T-shirts in a size or two bigger and wear them as super cute t-shirt dresses. I got the idea when I started stealing my boyfriend’s t-shirts for sleeping in. T-shirt dresses are a great cover up after the beach. Take a button up and add a belt, the perfect dress for a night out if you throw on some wedges.
